The truth is, the \u00a51 billion bottle is a 1945 Roman\u00e9e-Conti<\/b>. But it’s not a standard bottle\u2014it’s a Jeroboam (3-liter bottle)<\/b>.<\/p>\n

A Legendary Vintage: 1945 in Burgundy<\/h3>\n

In Burgundy, the 1945 vintage is renowned. A severe frost in the early spring drastically reduced the harvest, but for the vines that survived, the grapes were exceptionally concentrated and of outstanding quality.<\/p>\n

According to vintage charts, 1945 is rated at “\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605,”<\/b> or “Exceptional.”<\/p>\n

In a typical year, Domaine de la Roman\u00e9e-Conti produces around 6,000 bottles. In 1945, however, production was just 600 bottles<\/b>\u2014a mere one-tenth of the usual amount!<\/p>\n

What’s more, the Jeroboam size was produced in even more limited quantities, with only a few bottles ever made. It’s rumored that today, only a single Jeroboam of the 1945 Roman\u00e9e-Conti remains in the world.<\/p>\n

1. Slower Oxidation<\/h3>\n

The amount of space in the bottle’s neck (the volume between the cork and the wine’s surface) doesn’t change much, regardless of the bottle’s size.<\/p>\n

As the bottle gets bigger, the volume of wine increases, but the surface area of the wine exposed to oxygen stays the same. This allows the wine to age more slowly and gracefully<\/b>.<\/p>\n
