2020年の世界のワイン生産量のランキングでは、イタリア、フランス、スペインについで、堂々の第４位！
ニューワールドワインの中では、ダントツトップのアメリカ。
そんなアメリカワインの実に90％がカリフォルニア州で生産されているんです。
カリフォルニアワインの特徴は、凝縮感のある果実味のワインが多いこと。
ジューシーでフルーティーな果実味とパワーを感じられるものが多く、複雑さが魅力のフランスワインに比べ、分かりやすく一口目の第一印象が良いので、ワインを飲みなれない人でも好きになるワインが多いです。

霧によって凝縮感のあるブドウが育つユニークなテロワール

そんな凝縮感のある果実味を生み出しているのが、カリフォルニアの地形によるもの。
ひとつの州と言っても、日本列島がすっぽりと入るくらい広大なカリフォルニア州は、内陸部と沿岸部と２つに産地が分かれており、太平洋側に位置する標高の低い海岸山脈と、内陸側のシエラ・ネヴァダ山脈との間に挟まれた広大なセントラル・ヴァレーは海の影響を受けない大陸性の気候で、安定した量のワインを生産しています。
沿岸地域は海の影響により、年間を通じて穏やかな地中海性気候で、降雨も少ないことから、ブドウ樹は病気になりにくく、カビの影響も受けにくい地域で、ナパやソノマに代表されるノースコースト、パソ・ロブレスやサンタ・バーバラがあるセントラルコースト、
サンタ・クルーズ・マウンテンのあるベイエリアなどの産地があります。
そして、この地域特有の自然現象が「霧」です。
アラスカからの寒流が運ぶ冷たい空気と、内陸部の暖かい空気がぶつかって霧が現れ、霧は冷えた空気に乗ってゆっくりと内陸部へ移動し、カリフォルニアワインの銘醸地でもあるソノマやナパ・ヴァレーの上空を移動。
陽が高くなると同時に霧は消えていきますが、日中の強い日差しと、早朝の霧がもたらす涼しい空気による昼夜の寒暖差が凝縮感のある味わいのブドウを育てます。

The Unique Terroir of California: Grapes Concentrated by Fog

The concentrated fruit flavors that California is famous for are a direct result of its diverse geography. California is a massive state, large enough to contain the entire island of Japan, and its wine regions are divided into coastal and inland areas.

The vast Central Valley, nestled between the low-lying coastal mountains and the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the east, has a continental climate unaffected by the sea. This region is known for producing a consistent volume of wine.

However, the coastal regions are what give California wines their finesse. Influenced by the Pacific Ocean, these areas have a mild Mediterranean climate with low rainfall, making the vines less susceptible to disease and mold. This is where you’ll find famous regions like North Coast (Napa and Sonoma), Central Coast (Paso Robles and Santa Barbara), and the Bay Area (Santa Cruz Mountains).

A natural phenomenon unique to this area is the fog. Cold air from the Alaska Current collides with the warm inland air, creating a dense marine layer. This fog slowly moves inland, blanketing famous appellations like Sonoma and Napa Valley. The fog dissipates as the sun rises, but the cool air it brings in the morning, combined with the intense daytime sun, creates a significant diurnal temperature variation. This daily cycle of warmth and coolness is what concentrates the grapes’ flavors, creating the rich, expressive wines we love.

世界のワイン史に革命を起こした「パリスの審判」

今から40年ちょっと前まではカリフォルニアワインは無名で、フランスでは見向きもされませんでした。
そんなカリフォルニアワインに転機が訪れたのが1976年5月24日。
のちに「パリスの審判」と呼ばれるパリでおこなわれたカリフォルニアワインとフランスワインのブラインドテイスティング対決は、世界のワイン史に革命を起こし、カリフォルニアワインが一気に世界に知られるきっかけとなった出来事です。
当時、パリでワインスクール「アカデミー・デュ・ヴァン」を営んでいたスティーブン・スパリュア氏とアメリカ人の講師であるパトリシア・ギャラガー氏が、スクールの宣伝もかねて、アメリカ独立200周年をワインイベントで祝いたいと発案したものでした。
当時フランスではニューワールドワインのカリフォルニアワインは無名で、カリフォルニアワインのおいしさを知る人などほとんどいませんでしたが、スティーブン・スパリュア氏は、自身のスクールに通うアメリカ人の生徒からカリフォルニアワインをお土産でもらうことがあり、いち早くカリフォルニアワインのすばらしさに気づいていたのです。
そのこともあり、多くのフランス人にカリフォルニアワインのすばらしさを広めたい。
そんな思いから、このブラインドテイスティング対決のイベントを企画しました。
このブラインドテイスティング対決では、スパリュア氏の人脈をいかし、ドメーヌ・ド・ラ・ロマネ・コンティの共同経営者であるオベール・ド・ヴィレーヌや、三ツ星レストラン「トゥール・ダルジャン」のシェフ・ソムリエであるクリスチャン・ヴァネケといった、
ワイン協会の審査官や、醸造家、一流シェフ、ワイン専門紙の編集者など、フランスのワイン界を代表する著名人9名を審査員に迎え、赤ワインはカベルネソーヴィニヨン、白ワインはシャルドネに限定し、カリフォルニアワインから６銘柄、フランスワインから4銘柄の赤ワインと白ワインそれぞれ10本をブラインドでテイスティングすることになりました。
フランスワインは、5大シャトーをはじめとする世界に名高い高級ワインばかり。
正直、スティーブン・スパリュア氏自身もカリフォルニアワインが勝てるなんて予測はしていませんでしたが、その結果はなんと白ワイン、赤ワインともカリフォルニアワインがフランスワインに勝利し、この結果は、タイム誌の6月号に「パリスの審判（Judgement of Paris）」というタイトルで掲載され、瞬く間に世界中に知れ渡りました。

世界のワインラバーが憧れるカルトワイン

先ほどのパリスの審判によってカリフォルニアワインが世界に知られるきっかけとなり、1位に輝いたスタッグ・リーブスや、リターンマッチで1位になったクロ・デュ・バルなどは、「カルトワイン」と呼ばれるワインの代表格となりました。
カルトワインの中には、ロバート・パーカーが高得点をつけたことで、創業わずか数年で一躍脚光を浴びることになったまさにシンデレラワインのような、ダナ・エステーツ、ルイス セラーズなど、さまざまな種類があります。
また、カリフォルニアワインの父であるロバート・モンダヴィと、フランスのボルドーのシャトー・ムートン・ロートシルトのコラボから生まれたスーパープレミアムワインのオーパスワンもカルトワインの1つです。
中でも、伝説的なカルトワインが、スクリーミング・イーグル。
不動産業で成功を収めたジーン・フィリップス女史がオークヴィルにワイナリーを設立し、ファーストヴィンテージから、いきなりパーカーポイント99点を獲得し、瞬く間に世界中に知れ渡り、今もカルトワインの頂点に君臨し続けています。

Cult Wines: The Holy Grail for Wine Lovers

The Judgment of Paris was a launchpad for California wines, turning top finishers like Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars and Clos du Val into household names. These wines became archetypal examples of what the industry now calls “cult wines.”

The world of cult wines is filled with incredible stories. Some, like Dana Estates and Lewis Cellars, earned a “Cinderella” status, rocketing to fame just a few years after their founding, thanks to stellar reviews from influential critics like Robert Parker. Another iconic cult wine is Opus One, a super-premium collaboration between California winemaking pioneer Robert Mondavi and France’s Château Mouton Rothschild.

But if there’s one name that defines the cult wine legend, it’s Screaming Eagle. Founder Jean Phillips, a successful real estate agent, established her winery in Oakville. With its very first vintage, Screaming Eagle was awarded an astonishing 99 points by Parker, instantly catapulting it to global fame. To this day, it remains at the pinnacle of cult wines.

また、火山性土壌から海洋性土壌まで30種以上の異なる土壌が存在し、隣り合う畑同士でも土壌が異なることも珍しくないほど種類豊富な土壌から、さまざまな個性のワインが生まれています。
ナパ・ヴァレーのAVAには、16の細かな地域を分類するサブ・リージョンがあり、中でも有名なのが、セント・ヘレナからオーク・ノール・ディストリクトまでのナパ・ヴァレーの中央部の産地に歴史的なワイナリーやカルトワインの造り手が集中しています。
とくにオークヴィルは、ナパ・ヴァレーの中心に位置しており、温暖ながらも夜間と早朝に出る霧の影響を受けて、酸味のしっかりとした凝縮感のある高品質なカベルネ・ソーヴィニヨンが育つため、完璧なバランスのワインを生み出す銘醸地として有名です。
ロバート・モンダヴィ氏と、シャトー・ムートン・ロートシルトの所有者フィリップ・ド・ロスチャイルド氏とのジョイント・ベンチャーとして始まり、今では世界的にも有名になったプレミアワインのオーパス・ワンや、1本50万円以上の値がつくカルトワインのスクリーミング・イーグル、パーカーポイント100点を5度も獲得したハーラン・エステートなどがこのオークヴィルにあります。

The Main Wine Regions of California: Napa Valley

The Napa Valley is located in the North Coast region, about an hour’s drive north of San Francisco. The valley is home to roughly 170 square kilometers of vineyards and experiences a quintessential Mediterranean climate. The northern end of the valley is warmer, while the climate becomes progressively cooler as you move closer to San Francisco.

Because it’s a valley enclosed by mountains to the east and west, Napa boasts a multitude of microclimates, creating a highly diverse range of growing environments. The soils are equally varied, with over 30 different types, ranging from volcanic to marine origins. It’s not uncommon for adjacent vineyards to have completely different soil compositions, leading to wines of distinct character.

Napa Valley is home to 16 sub-regions, known as AVAs (American Viticultural Areas). Many of the most historic wineries and a high concentration of cult wine producers are found in the central part of the valley, stretching from St. Helena to Oak Knoll District.

Oakville is particularly famous. Situated at the heart of Napa Valley, its warm days are tempered by the influence of fog that rolls in at night and in the early morning. This diurnal temperature shift is ideal for growing high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon with firm acidity and concentrated flavors, producing wines of perfect balance. It’s here that you’ll find legendary wines like Opus One, a collaboration between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. This is also the home of iconic cult wines like Screaming Eagle, which can fetch prices over ¥500,000 per bottle, and Harlan Estate, which has received a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker five times.

The Main Wine Regions of California: Sonoma

Sonoma’s winemaking history actually predates Napa Valley’s, and it’s considered by many to be the birthplace of wine in California.

The region is home to 18 distinct appellations, each with its own unique climate and geography, resulting in a remarkable diversity of wine styles. The Russian River Valley is a prime example; influenced by the Pacific Ocean to the west, it’s regularly blanketed in a cool fog. This creates a cool climate in the mornings and evenings, yet the days are warm and sunny. This significant diurnal shift leads to grapes with concentrated flavors and firm acidity, making the area famous for its high-quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Another notable area is the Alexander Valley, known for its beautiful canyons and picturesque small towns. The region is dotted with both historic, multi-generational grape growers and many high-end wineries.

Overall, due to its generally cooler climate, Sonoma tends to produce wines that are more elegant and delicate, often a contrast to the powerful and concentrated wines of Napa Valley
